009 was a difficult year for many people and businesses across the country.  While many large businesses received substantial government assistance, there was no government bailout for small, local businesses like Crew Bar + Grill.  Crew celebrated its fifth anniversary this past summer while it struggled to keep the doors open.

“Uptown is no Magnificent Mile and it was shocking to see how hard the economy hit us,” says Brian Wells, one of the original owners of Crew.  Faced with the prospect of having to shut down,  Crew, with the help of the Kudan Group, was able to team up with two new partners, Mike Sullivan and Mark Robertson, who are giving Crew much needed financial stability and the ability to move forward with Crew’s five-year remodel plan.  Scheduled for completion just prior to Super Bowl weekend, Crew’s remodel plan includes 19 new high-definition flat screen TVs anchored by an impressive 63” set to replace its big screen projector.  With this new equipment, Crew will be able to bring its customers the latest and greatest in HD sports programming.  Crew will also update its look with all new tables and chairs.

“Mike and Mark are definitely a welcome addition to Crew and Brian and I are looking forward to a great partnership.  They have a very different set of skills, one being an attorney and the other a CPA.  I think we are going to be a great team,” says Steven Milford, who opened Crew with Wells.  Together, Wells and Milford have managed Crew since Day 1 and will continue to oversee day-to-day operations.

“Mark and I have been impressed with Steve and Brian since we first met them last August.  They have created a well-recognized brand name, with a loyal following and great food,” says Sullivan.  “It’s a credit to the two of them that Crew has been able to survive the recession when so many businesses have failed.”

Crew, Chicago’s original gay sports bar and grill, opened in the summer of 2005 and was the first new business to take a chance in the 4800 block in Uptown in several years.  “The talk of great things happening has gone on for years around here and we feel like we were a positive part of starting to make that happen,” says Wells.

Crew is the home of the Beergarita, a tequila and beer concoction, which is almost as famous as Crew’s oversized wings.  Crew’s Monday night Pub Trivia was recently selected Best Pub Quiz in Chicago and Crew was just named one of the Top 100 Bars by Chicago magazine.  Crew has also won awards from Fox Morning News Viewers, Metromix, Chicago Free Press, Competition magazine and New City.

Crew is closed from Monday , January 25th and will reopen on January 28th with their all new TVs and other cool surprises.
